Foundational Project Management
In Malaysia’s fast-evolving digital landscape, effective project management has become essential to ensure the success of ICT initiatives — from software development and infrastructure upgrades to digital transformation and e-government services.
The Foundation of ICT Project Management course provides participants with a practical and structured understanding of ICT project management principles, processes, and best practices. Grounded in international standards such as PMI’s PMBOK® and PRINCE2®, and aligned with Malaysia’s KRISA framework by MAMPU, this course equips participants with the tools and insights needed to manage ICT projects successfully within both the public and private sectors.
Delivered in-person in Kuala Lumpur, this two-day programme blends lectures, interactive activities, case studies, and group discussions to ensure participants can apply concepts directly to their organisational context.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this 2-day training, participants will be able to :
1. Understand the fundamentals of project management and its application to ICT initiatives.
2. Map out the ICT project lifecycle and its key phases (initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, closing).
3. Apply the KRISA framework in planning and managing ICT projects within the Malaysian public-sector context.
4. Identify the roles, responsibilities, and governance structures that ensure project success.
5. Understand and plan their own Project Management Certification Roadmap (CAPM®, PMP®, PRINCE2®).
6. Use essential project management tools and templates (scope statement, WBS, stakeholder register, risk log).
7. Develop practical skills to lead ICT projects effectively and align them with strategic objectives.
Prerequisites

Basic Computer Literacy

Comfortable using a computer, internet, and common software tools (e.g., Microsoft Office or Google Workspace).

General Understanding of ICT Concepts

Familiarity with common IT terms (systems, networks, software, databases) to understand examples and case studies in context.

Experience in a Work or Academic Environment

Ideally, participants should have some exposure to working in teams or contributing to projects, even in a supporting role.

This is an introductory-level course designed for beginners or those transitioning into project-based ICT roles.

Module 1: Introduction to ICT Project Management
- What defines an ICT project, project vs operations, the ICT project manager’s role, and project environment overview
Module 2: Project Lifecycle and Governance
- The five phases of project management; governance structures, PMO roles, and public-sector governance principles.
Module 3: KRISA by MAMPU
- Overview of KRISA (Kerangka Rujukan Industri Sistem Aplikasi) framework, key phases, deliverables, and templates used in Malaysian government ICT projects.
Module 4: Planning ICT Projects – Scope, Schedule & Cost
- Techniques for defining project scope, developing WBS, scheduling using Gantt charts, and cost estimation
Module 5: Managing Risk, Change & Stakeholders
- Risk identification and management, change control, stakeholder mapping and engagement strategies.
Module 6: Monitoring, Controlling & Closing ICT Projects
- Monitoring progress using KPIs, project reporting, managing scope and schedule changes, and conducting post-implementation reviews.
Module 7: Project Management Certification Roadmap
- Overview of global certifications (CAPM®, PMP®, PRINCE2®, AgilePM); eligibility, preparation paths, and career advancement opportunities.
Module 8: Practical Workshop – ICT Project Simulation
- Group exercise: participants plan and present an ICT project scenario incorporating KRISA principles, stakeholder analysis, and risk plan.
Module 9: Tools, Templates & Best Practices
- Hands-on session using project management tools (MS Project, Excel templates, Jira overview) and lessons learned from ICT projects.
